HEALTH CURRICULUM



 

Health Education

 

There are seven standards for health education established by New Hampshire Department of Education Guidelines. Students in the Epping School District begin their formal study of health in Grade 6 and increase their proficiency through the middle and high school level. As in all Unified Arts classes, there is an integration and application of topics studied in language arts classes and in math classes.

 

National Health Education Standards

  • Students will be able to utilize concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Students will be able to access valid health information and health-promoting products and services.
  • Students will understand that practicing health enhancing behaviors and reducing health risks improves wellness
  • Students will be able to analyze the effects of culture, media, technology, and other influences on health.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate the use of interpersonal communication skills to enhance health.
  • Students will be able to use goal setting and decision making to enhance health.
  • Students will be able to advocate for family and community health to improve personal wellness.

Proficiency Statements 

Through participation in the health education program, students will be able to make the following statements:

 

6th grade

  • I can work effectively with other peers during activities and projects.
  • I can use math skills such as bar graphs, and percentages with food labeling to measure nutritional values.
  • I can use strategies to help and report bullying at any time to parents, nurses, principals, deans of students, teachers, and guidance counselors.
  • I can identify all the different types of bullying:  verbal, physical, cyber, intimidation factor, and the related emotional/mental stages.

7th grade

  • I can say “no” through strategies of D.A.R.E. class.
  • I can work effectively with other peers during activities and projects.
  • I can use strategies to help and report bullying at any time to parents, nurses, principals, deans of students, teachers, and guidance counselors.
  • I can identify the differences in drugs such as Prescription, Over-The-Counter, Illegal, Legal, Hallucinogens, Herbal, Stimulant, and Depressant.

 

8th grade

  • I can utilize conflicts through stress management activities including reading, relaxation music, yoga, and writing techniques.
  • I can work effectively with other peers during activities and projects.
  • I can use math skills such as bar graphs, and percentages with food labeling to measure nutritional values.
  • I can use strategies to help and report bullying at any time to parents, nurses, principals, deans of students, teachers, and guidance counselors.
  • I can label the heart, skeletal system, and muscular system of the human body.
  • I can identify different types of sexually transmitted diseases and know the signs and symptoms for both males and females.
  • I can use strategies to help with stress management skills.

 

Grade 10

  • I can analyze/evaluate risk factors, risk, and protective factors for health promotion and disease prevention.
  • I can access valid health information.
  • I can utilize stress management skills to improve wellness.
  • I can utilize conflict resolution strategies to improve wellness.
  • I can clarify thoughts, ideas and feelings to become an effective communicator.
  • I can “say no,” and have strategies to support my statement.
  • I can use goal-setting and decision-making strategies to improve wellness.
