INTEGRATED STUDIES CURRICULUM
Introduction
The Integrated Studies courses have been designed to allow the students opportunities to pursue 21st century themes in a truly integrated fashion. Students create a variety of projects which integrate the skills from not only core content areas, but also from other unified arts courses. The projects reflect their own areas of interest within a structured framework. This course is unique to Epping in that rather than addressing specific state standards, it has been designed thematically using standards developed by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills (www.p21.org).
Goals for Integrated Studies
The goal of the Integrated Studies class is to focus on the 21st Century themes which include Global Awareness, Financial, Economic, Business and Entrepreneurial Literacy, Health Literacy and Environmental Literacy. Learning and Innovation Skills as well as Life and Career Skills are areas that are stressed in these classes to help prepare students for their future.
The goal of the 6th Grade "Color Your World" is to help students become more globally aware and acquire skills, attitudes and knowledge that encourage tolerance and understanding of others as well as excite students to become lifelong learners.
The goal of the 7th Grade "Bright Ideas" is to encourage students to think as entrepreneurs and focus on critical thinking and problem solving skills while working with others. Successful projects will require students to work together, be creative, take initiative, demonstrate self-direction and show responsibility.
The goal of the 8th Grade "Iron Chefs" class is to challenge students in the kitchen by combining the health literacy and financial themes along with life and career skills.
